- Order Entry Phase (9.00 AM to 9.08 AM):Investors and traders can place buy/sell orders during the order entry phase, which runs from 9:00 AM to 9.08 AM. If necessary, they can also change or cancel orders.
- Order Matching Phase (9.08 AM to 9.12 AM): In this stage, the opening price of the securities is established by the exchange’s system matching buy and sell orders. During this stage, no more order cancellations or changes are permitted.
- Buffer Phase (9.12 AM to 9.15 AM): The purpose of the buffer phase, which runs from 9.12 AM to 9.15 AM, is to facilitate a seamless transition from the pre-opening to the regular trading session. Following this session, the opening price is announced, and regular trading starts then.
Regular Trading Session
The typical time frame that stock exchanges permit investors to purchase and sell assets is known as a “normal trading session.” From 9:15 AM until 3:30 PM, traders are busily purchasing and disposing of stocks.
The supply and demand of the stock in the market are used to determine the price of the stock during this session.
After-closing Meeting
Two sessions can be distinguished in the Indian stock market’s post-closing session:
- Between 3:30 PM and 3:40 PM: The weighted average technique of the last 30 minutes of trading (3 PM to 3:30 PM) is used to determine the closing price of stocks between 3:30 PM and 3:40 PM. The value of many indices, including the Sensex and Nifty, is determined by this price.
- Between 3:40 PM and 4:00 PM: Investors can place orders for the following trading day between 3:40 and 4:00 PM. As long as there are enough buyers and sellers in the market, orders placed during this session are executed at the day’s closing price.
Timings of Block Deal Sessions

Block deal sessions currently take place within two 15-minute intervals during a trading day:
